Examine Presentation The abbreviation KESBAN is the blend of two Malay words which is represent ââ¬ËKeselamatan dan Pembangunan or security/guard and improvement. KESBAN characterized as the whole of measures embraced by all administration organizations to shield and fortify the general public from disruption, disorder and insurgency. It was presented authoritatively by the late Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdul Razak container Hussein in 1971 when the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) turned into a significant wellspring of concern and irritation to the legislature because of shaky condition made by the CPM. In this way, KESBAN Belt presented by National Security Council Directive No 11 on fifth Feb 1980 included region of 24km south of Malaysia-Thailand fringe with the length of 580km. Foundation Idea of KESBAN KESBAN idea accentuate on two most significant viewpoints, Internal Security (IS) and inside turn of events (IDEV). The IS viewpoint is the region of the outfitted and formally dressed (military and police) though the IDEV basically includes all the common legislative offices duties towards the advancement in the nation. IS accentuating on full scope of measures taken by the security powers to shield the general public from disruption, disorder and revolt through the direct of strategic tasks to pulverize the Communist Terrorist (CTs) and their whole network.IDEV stressing on the movement that driving towards the fulfillment of adjusted social, political and monetary improvement as a component of country building. The strategic tasks led by the security powers intended to set up control of the challenged regions and will help the usage of IDEV exercises by the others government offices. Methodology of KESBAN KESBAN, as examined in applied terms, might be set in valuable point of view by survey KESBAN procedure as being made out of three reliant parts, adjusted turn of events, preparation, and balance. Adjusted Development. Endeavors to accomplish national objectives through adjusted political, social, and monetary turn of events. It incorporates exercises to mitigate dissatisfaction by giving chances to people and gatherings inside the general public. Activation. Incorporates all exercises to spur and arrange the people on the side of the administration through KESBAN programs just as exercises to shield the masses from extremist activities. Balance. Incorporates every legal movement to disturb, disarrange, and rout an extremist association. Vision 2020 Vision 2020 was presented by Tun Dr Mahathir receptacle Mohamad (fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia) in 1991. A definitive target that pointed is to change Malaysia from creating nation to completely created nation continuously 2020. There are nine moves that need to defeat with the goal for state to accomplish the mission. Conversation The Communist Party of Malaya has given up on second Dec 1989 because of the absence of help from the individuals who are not certainty with their struggle. The CPMs gave up additionally marked the achievement of KESBAN idea in battling the uprising. The fall of CPM in Malaysia draw the KESBAN idea towards the new measurement. Anyway the idea was still stayed in term of duties by the entirety of the administration organizations involved.â It is difficult to accomplish advancement without solidness inside. It just can accomplish with the national solidarity. The military essential jobs as of now is to shield our power from outside danger while the others government offices concentrated to build up the nation. The auxiliary jobs of military are to help the Royal Malaysian Police and other common experts in the upkeep of open request. In time of national catastrophe, the military would constantly contribute and help the common expert in national development.â THE RELEVANCE CONCEPTS OF KESBAN The pertinence idea of KESBAN will be look and examined into two viewpoints , which are Internal Security and Internal Development. Inward Security Factor will cover under Internal Security as follows: Knowledge. The nonstop assembling wise data is exceptionally basic in Internal Security. Despite the fact that the CPM has been given up, the new kind of fear monger could exist, for example, Jemaah Islamiah and Al Maunah in year 2001. The foundation of Military Intelligent Officer and Police Special Branch inside the territory of duty was the best safeguard. Strategic Operations. The strategic activities by the military particularly inside Malaysia-Thailand Border are as yet staying until today. Anyway the normal powers just sent in unavailable zone in the profound wilderness, for example, in Kedah and Perak. The remainder of the territory inside the KESBAN Belt keeping an eye on by the Border Security Force which was presented in 2007. At the present time the danger is changes from CPM to non conventional danger like medication sneaking, human dealing, rice pirating and others. Psyops/Psywar. Those days CPM was directed genuinely activity utilizing printed pamphlet so as to win support from the supporter. Right nowâ the thousand years dangers will be increasingly confounded, the will utilize informations and innovation, for example, web and online journals as a stage for spread their propagandas.â To defeat this difficult government utilize a broad communications, for example, TV, paper, announcement and make some demonstration like Information Act so as to forestall the new innovation has being control by the threat.â Municipal Action. Municipal activity is a significant contributing element in building up a good picture of the administration according to individuals. The military jobs presently actualized through the program TenteraMasukDesa or GerakanJiwaMurni under the Military Civic Action venture which centering in rustic territories. They use idea gotongroyongto developed the house,â clean the mosque and the sea shore. More than that, military clinical division likewise assume their job when go to country region and give a free treatment to the poor townspeople. This activity really can give a decent recognition for the administration and reinforce their help from rustic region. Inside Development Factors under Internal Development as follows: Political Stability. The idea of national front which includes the three principle ideological groups has been advanced through development and logic of the political turn of events. Political soundness influences national security in Malaysia since any unsteadiness will achieve inner instability and a large group of different variables that will debilitate the state, for example, financial specialist certainty and joblessness in this way causing a monetary log jam. Social Development.Social advancement depends on demeanor and worth changes to a more prominent degree than is important in either political or financial turn of events. Presentation of 1Malaysia idea by current Prime Minister, Dato Seri Mohd Najib receptacle Tun Hj Abdul Razak in 2009 was the initial step taken to accomplish the main difficulties towards vision 2020 system. This idea required the exertion from all administration organizations to actualize it. Economy.National solidarity remains a definitive objective of financial improvement in light of the fact that the legislature understood that a unified society is key to the advancement of social and political security and continued turn of events. Vision 2020 won't be accomplished if the improvement of economy stale. Notwithstanding, National Economic Advisory Council (NEAC) selected by the Prime Minister was the most significant gathering to screen the monetary turn of events. End After socialist rebellion consider dispensed with on Dec 1989, interior security andâ inward advancement must be ceaselessly progress. All security angle (inside security) must be kept up and improving in like manner so as to confronting the danger in this new globalization period. Advancement is a persistent motivation of the legislature to change Malaysia from creating nation to created nation in the year 2020. Improvement can't be acknowledged without the assurance of security. Along these lines, base on the idea of security referenced above, idea of KESBAN is still significance in the year 2020 yet with the distinction approach. The thing that matters is just the point of the methodology where during first started, KESBAN was to counter the socialist rebellion, while now it is a piece of counter measure to keep up the develop the dynamic improvement of the country. rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-42391634410656491942020-07-17T00:00:00.001-07:002020-07-17T00:00:03.324-07:00How Bottom-Up Processing WorksHow Bottom-Up Processing Works Basics Print How Bottom-Up Processing Works By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. This process suggests that our perceptual experience is based entirely on the sensory stimuli that we piece together using only data that is available from our senses. In order to make sense of the world, we must take in energy from the environment and convert it to neural signals, a process known as sensation. It is in the next step of the process, known as perception, that our brains interpret these sensory signals. Verywell / Emily Roberts Definition How exactly do people process perceptual information from the world around them? There are two basic approaches to understanding how this sensation and perception takes place. One of these is known as bottom-up processing and the other is known as top-down processing. Bottom-Up Focuses on incoming sensory data Takes place in real time More data driven Top-Down Uses previous experience and expectations Info is interpreted using contextual clues Bottom-up processing can be defined as sensory analysis that begins at the entry levelâ"with what our senses can detect. This form of processing begins with sensory data and goes up to the brains integration of this sensory information. Information is carried in one direction starting with the retina and proceeding to the visual cortex. This process suggests that processing begins with perception of the stimuli and is fueled by basic mechanisms developed through evolution. Unlike top-down processing, bottom-up processing is purely data-driven and requires no previous knowledge or learning. Bottom-up processing takes place as it happens. For example, if you see an image of an individual letter on your screen, your eyes transmit the information to your brain, and your brain puts all of this information together. How It Works The theory of bottom-up processing was introduced by psychologist E. J. Gibson, who took a direct approach to the understanding of perception. Rather than being dependent upon learning and context, Gibson felt that perception was a âwhat you see is what you getâ process.?? He argued that sensation and perception are the same thing. Because Gibsonâs theory suggests that processing can be understood solely in terms of environmental stimuli, it is something referred to as the ecological theory of perception. The bottom-up processing works like this: We experience sensory information about the world around us, such as light levels from our environment. These signals are brought to the retina. Transduction transforms these signals into electrical impulses that can then be transmitted.Electrical impulses travel along visual pathways to the brain, where they enter the visual cortex and are processed to form our visual experience. This approach to understanding perception is an example of reductionism. Rather than looking at perception more holistically, including how sensory information, visual processes, and expectations contribute to how we see the world, bottom-up processing breaks the process down into its most basic elements. How Psychologists Use Reductionism to Understand Behavior Bottom-Up vs. Top-Down Processing You can compare how bottom-up processing works to how top-down processing works by considering examples of how each process works. Imagine that you see a somewhat obscure shape. If you saw the shape on its own, using bottom-up processing, you might immediately perceive it as a capital letter B. Now if someone were to place that image next to other context clues, such as next to the numbers 12 and 14, you might them perceive it as the number 13 rather than a capital B. In this case, you use top-down processing to interpret the visual information in light of surrounding visual cues. Visual Illusions While the two processes are often presented as competing theories, both play an important role in perception. The experience of visual illusions, for example, can illustrate how bottom-up and top-down processes influence how we experience the world. You have probably seen a number of visual illusions where random ink blobs initially just look like ambiguous shapes, but after a moment begin to look like a face. If we used only bottom-up processing, these ink blobs would continue to look just like random shapes on paper. However, because our brains are predisposed to perceive faces and because of top-down processes, we are likely to begin to see a human face in these ambiguous shapes. Brain Disorders and Damage Prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, is a neurological disorder in which people are unable to recognize familiar faces, including their own. While other aspects of visual processing and cognitive functioning remain unaffected, people experience functional sensation but incomplete perception.?? Patients are able to perceive familiar faces, but not able to recognize them. In this case, bottom-up processing remains functional, but a lack of top-down processing makes them unable to relate what they are seeing to stored knowledge. This demonstrates how important both processes are in shaping our perceptual experiences. A Word From Verywell Bottom-up processing can be extremely useful for understanding certain elements of how perception occurs. However, research has also shown that other factors including expectation and motivation (elements of top-down processing) can have an impact on how we perceive things around us. Casey Malosh Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo Paper November 24, 2015 Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo were both explorers in the 13th Century. Battuta was a Muslim who explored in India, East Africa, the Middle East, parts of Russia and areas surrounding Constantinople (in the excerpt we read). Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant who traveled over land from Venice for half of his journey from Acre to Beijing. From Beijing he traveled the South China Sea, through the Indian Ocean, to the Arabic Sea and continuing his journey on land from Ormuz to Venice. The passage we were given to read concentrated on Marco Poloââ¬â¢s journey through Persia and Southwest Asia. While visiting Zafari, Ibn Battuta was shown great hospitality by two shakihs. Abuââ¬â¢l-ââ¬ËAbbas Ahmad and Abu ââ¬ËAbdallah Muhammad, sons of the shaikh Abu Bakr. They were both men of great benevolence. When they washed their hands after a meal, Abuââ¬â¢l-ââ¬ËAbbas, took that water in which they washed, drank some of it, and sent the servant with the rest of it to his wives and children, and they drank it as well. This is what they do with all visitors to them in whom they perceived indications of goodness. Battuta was also entertained by Abu Hashim al-Zabidi, who personally served and washed his hands, not delegating it to anyone else. (Gibb, 385-386) During Battutaââ¬â¢s visit in Constantinople he had a chance meeting with the ex-King of Constantinople who renounced his throne and became a monk. She might walk towards Yarvil and catch a bus outside town, where nobody would see her. Her parents would not miss her until five thirty, when they expected her home from the cafe. A desperate plan formed as she walked, hot and tired: if she could find a place to stay that cost less than fifty pounds â⬠¦ all she wanted was to be alone and ply her razor blade. Sukhvinder took a sharp right onto the bridge, terrified that one of them might notice her. Krystalââ¬â¢s yells were echoing off the rushing water. Sukhvinder caught sight of something in the river below. Her hands were already on the hot stone ledge before she had thought about what she was doing, and then she had hoisted herself onto the edge of the bridge; she yelled, ââ¬ËHeââ¬â¢s in the river, Krys!ââ¬â¢ and dropped, feet first, into the water. Estimating the abundance of plant and animal species: In order to estimate the prosperity of the plant and animal species (seedlings and crab holes), the quadrant technique was applied. 10 one meter quadrants where placed along the mangrove creek beside the wooden pathway. By counting the amount of the seedlings and crab holes in each of the 10 quadrants, the results were listed on a piece of paper. For the seedlings you take the average amount in all the quadrants and multiply it by the total area that the mangrove seedling creek covered to obtain the overall abundance of the seedlings. For each one crab hole lives one crab in it, the average amount of crab holes in the 10 quadrants where multiplied by the area of mangrove seedling creek covered to obtain the abundance of the crabs in each crab hole. Describing the distribution of a plant and animal species: The first location was the mangrove trees; at the first location youââ¬â¢ll find a long transect. Along the transect where 10 meter posts that ended at 100 meters, mangrove trees where surrounding each one of the meters. The height of these mangrove trees were listed according to the estimation of the meter posts in every metre from 10100. The results were recorded on a vegetation graph, where the y axis is the height of the mangroves in meters and the x axis is the distance distant from the creek in meters. The crabs liver near rivers because the abundant of food resources. When the tide comes up and deposits a rotted organic matter, referred to as detritus more offer near the creak. Results: The vegetation profile for Mangroves The height of the mangroves in the transect as function of distance (m) Graph1: Relation Between organisms in this ecosystem Relationship| Definition| Mutualism | This is a relationship that is mutually beneficial for both organisms. Example: Like the shark and the remora, the remora swims under the shark and eats the dead skin of the shark, the remora benefits by being protected by the shark and the shark benefitââ¬â¢s by losing all of its dead skin. | Allelopathy| This happens when a plant releases a chemical to inhibit the growth of other plants. Example: The casuarina tree, it release casuarina needles to prevent the growth of other plants around it. | Commensalism | A relationship that benefits one organism and does not harm the other. Example: The epiphyte, it stays on the tree, the epiphyte benefits by having a place to stay and the tree is not harmed. Parasitism | In this relationship, one organism benefits, but the host organism is harmed. The abiotic factors which we studied in the mangroves ecosystem and the Saltmarsh community where soil temp, soil moisture, light intensity, wind velocity, air temp and humidity. These abiotic factors were recorded in 3 phases (times). The soil temp and the air temp in the saltmarsh was slightly higher from the soil and air temp in the mangroves because of the height of the mangroves, thereââ¬â¢s hardly enough sunlight hitting the soil and the air. The soil moisture in the mangrove community increased from the saltmarsh community due to the mangrove trees releasing some water and because the sunlight hits the saltmarsh which allows the water in the soil to evaporate which means the soil moisture is lower in the saltmarsh community hence soil is muddier in the mangroves community. The light intensity in the saltmarsh was higher than the light intensity in the mangroves just like in the soil temp the sun hardly hits, because of the height of the mangroves that prevent the sunlight to pass through; hence this influences the levels of photosynthetic productivity. The wind velocity where lightly equal in both of the 2 ecosystems the slightly difference could be because of the time. The humidity in the saltmarsh increased from the humidity of the mangroves. ââ¬Å"The abiotic factors for the saltmarsh and mangroves ecosystem are not all similar over the whole areaâ⬠(5). The mangroves could be near a creek or a river and vice-versa the salt marsh could be near an ocean this might change the results we obtained with the abiotic factors. Abiotic factors differ with each area the ecosystem is. Abiotic factors could affect some mangroves and saltmarsh ecosystems the light intensity could be one of these factors, donââ¬â¢t plants need sunlight to perform photosynthesis, if light isnââ¬â¢t available for the mangroves how are they going to perform photosynthesis and grow and develop. Wind patterns can also affect the ecosystem, air picks up the vaporized water from the ocean it loses water as it is forced up mountain this is the procedure where rainfall occurs and rainfall is also important in the procedure of plant growth. Soil moisture also affects the distribution of organisms (mangroves) mangrove trees tend to site where the soil moisture is more high. The abundance of the crabs (crab holes) and mangrove seedling in the creek where obtained by applying the quadrant technique, we noticed that when the amount of seedling increased the amount of crab holes decreased hence the more the crab holes in the quadrant the seedling where less abundant. The map indicated the closer the mangrove seedling where to the creek the less abundant they were. Meanwhile for the crab holes the closer they were for the creek the more abundant the where. This is because of the food resources for the crabs, the tide comes up and deposits a rotted organic matter often referred to as detritus which is near the creak. The crabs also tend to live near the creek because of humans the crabs might get frightened from humans so they are more abundant further from the pathway near the creek. The quadrant method was used to estimate the abundance of crabs in each crab holes and the mangrove seedling in the Badu mangrove ecosystem. This method wasnââ¬â¢t that accurate because first of all it takes a lot of time and when counting the amount an individual might make a mistake or might miss one or two. But this method has an advantage that the environment being tested on is not affected or harmed, to improve the accuracy of the quadrant method one should be focused in counting the amount of plant and animal species and repeat the procedure more than one. The heights of the grey mangroves along the transect where measured the only disadvantage is the estimation of the height of the trees could be inaccurate, approaches in improving this method is by using measuring tape or some kind of measuring technique that is more accurate. A variety of equipment where used to measure the abiotic factors in the saltmarsh and the mangrove ecosystems, the equipment are: soil thermometer probe, soil moisture probe, anemometer, air thermometer, light meter and hygrometer. For the soil moisture probe, soil and air thermometer and the hygrometer the result was obtained by recording the reading of these equipment, this procedure was accurate. For the light meter and anemometer there where steps (steps in method above) an individual may not know how to use these meters and may take the wrong reading, like in the results there was a result of 10lux while the rest of the results were in hundreds. Actions in improving these methods is have an experienced guide next to one nd help, use up-to-date equipment be careful and focused while taking the reading and repetition of each method could help the results be more accurate. Biotic factors could affect an area were organismââ¬â¢s sites, human impact is a major one. Human impact could affect the mangrove ecosystem studied at the park, here are some impacts: * Littering is a major impact ââ¬Å"Much litter contains toxins and chemicals that are harmful to animal and plant lifeâ⬠(6). Hard surfaces and foot paths like cement which ââ¬Å"emissions of airborne pollution in the form of dust, gases, noise and vibration when operating machinery and during blasting in quarries, and damage to countryside from quarryingâ⬠(7). * Fertilizerââ¬â¢s they promote the growth of bacteria, fungi and algae. * Air pollution by factories and cars when the release smokes that is harmful to the air of the environment. * Physical damage for example teenagers vandalizing a natural resort. * The increase in fires not also promotes air pollution but it is damaging its whole surroundings. Wars could also have an impact on the environment. Strategies that could be applied to minimise or balance human impacts on the ecosystem: * Government could make fines for li ttering, increase the amount of rubbish bins. * More signs in the area that says fines for vandalizing property. * Create soft surfaces instead of hard ones. * Laws to produce the production of gases (green house) in factories. * Use filters on cars or factories to prevent the increase of air pollution. * Recycling. * Natural farming instead of using fertilizers. Conclusion: The aim for this experiment was measuring the biotic and abiotic factors which we measured by using different types of methods and techniques, and included them in the results in forms of tables and graphs. These results were used to acquiesce the priority of each experiment and to answer the aim of the experiment. The discussion discusses the results and clarifies how we couldââ¬â¢ve improved the tests and what was being affected in each one. We also studied the abundance and distribution of the plant and animal species it was presented in a graph, the description of the patterns where included in he results. Human impacts also have a huge impact on the ecosystems, so people should be careful and treat the ecosystems like their own children. Bicentennial Park can advertise the importance of ecosystems and educating generations to come. rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-44919163966186608082020-03-18T06:39:00.001-07:002020-03-18T06:39:02.846-07:00German Weapon Develop. (WWII) essaysGerman Weapon Develop. (WWII) essays If World War I was a war to end all wars then World War II was a war that redefined the rules of war. Great technological leaps were made, from radar to the atomic bomb. Germany in particular developed many new weapons such as the Tiger tank and the V2 rocket. With the exception of America with its atomic bomb, Germany made the largest technological strides of all the warring countries. Had Hitler let his generals do their jobs Germany might not have won, but would have lasted long enough to bargain effectively at the peace talks. Hitler not only made tactical mistakes, but also crippling logistical errors that lead to the inability for the Wehrmacht (the German Army) to supply itself. Early in the war, the Wehrmacht was feared for their tanks which the Russians and Americans could not match in power. However, later the Russians built the T-34 which was faster and more powerful than the Panther I and Tiger I tanks that the Germans were using. The Americans had also developed more effect anti-tank guns which could kill a Panther or Tiger easily. Hitler ordered that a better and more powerful tank be developed. After being shown the Tiger II, he immediately fell in love with it and ordered a larger gun put on it. The Tiger II was originally designed to be a medium tank with greater mobility than the T-34s. However, with the new gun and thus a new motor for the weight, it ended up being far heavier than any tank made up to that date. So, the original mobility that the engineers had hoped for was destroyed and was just another heavy tank. Hitler did not care though and ordered for production to begin immediately. The Tiger II was good because of its thick armor and range. Its 88mm barrels could hit a tank 3.5km (2.2mi) away which was far beyond any enemy tanks range. Up to this day, there are no records that the Tiger IIs frontal armor was ever penetrated. The Tiger II took an expert crew to be used effectively sin... rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-42569325337095744892020-03-01T22:24:00.001-08:002020-03-01T22:24:02.011-08:0010 Groundhog Day Quotes to Remind You Spring Is Near10 Groundhog Day Quotes to Remind You Spring Is Near It may seem far-fetched to those who live closer to the equator. This is evident in the wide use of the term "soul-mate" and the over use of the word in the songs we hear on the radio. Most of us, rarely describe how we behave or the manner in which we live our lives, as nourishing our souls. Most of us, cannot even give a definition or description of a soul if asked. Throughout history, the definition, composition and purpose of the human soul have been heavily debated and are often referred to as the Mind/Body argument. In some theologies, it is believed that if the soul only exists in the mind and if the soul does in fact, exist in the mind then it too dies when the brain ceases to function at death. In other theologies, the soul is described as an immaterial part of our physical beings and is without physical bounds. It does not die when our physical bodies die, but transcends from our bodies at death. The objections raised in this theory point to the fact that if the soul is immaterial, that is to say that it is not composed of matter, how then, is it said to exist In his The Summa Theologica, Saint Thomas Aquinas attempted to answer this objection and other questions raised regarding the existence of the human soul. In part one of The Summa Theologica the section titled "The Treatise of Man" the objection to the composition of a soul is argued that "nothing gives what it is not; for instance what is not hot does not give heat" (Aquinas section 75 article 1 The Summa Theologica). This goes to say that if the soul is the force that moves the body, and then the soul is the body. Aquinas countered the objection to say that the soul is not the body, but an act of the body. Aquinas goes on to state that the body and soul work in conjunction to create one entity. The body, working through the material by way of its' physical senses, converts the material to the immaterial. For instance, by sight a human being attains knowledge through reading. Through hearing, a human being attains knowledge by listening. By reading words on paper and listening to words through conversation and lecture the mind converts the material to the immaterial. This cognitive soul is dependant upon sensory experiences in order to form mental images or what is referred to in ancient texts as phantasms. Therefore, Aquinas argued, the body and soul are one. This theology by Aquinas raised the next objection: If the body and soul is indeed one unit, what happens to the soul when the body dies It is often noted that Saint Thomas Aquinas found the basis for his theology through the study of Aristotle's philosophies. The division from Aristotelian for Aquinas' occurs when the Saint answers the questions as to what becomes of the soul when the physical human body no longer exists. Aquinas theorized that the soul and the body are separated at death. The continued survival of the immaterial soul after the death of the material body is based on God's will. Steeped in his belief that the body and soul exist as one unit, Aquinas states ""...it is better for the soul to be united to the body than not to be united to it, since it is rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-24335886171455230062020-01-24T17:39:00.001-08:002020-01-24T17:39:03.746-08:00The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison Essay -- Ralph Ellison Invisible MaThe Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison The goal of every person is to find their place in society. The journey itself is a hard one, but sometimes unforeseen obstacles make this journey nearly impossible. The book, The Invisible Man, takes us along the journey with a man that has no name. You may think that it is odd not to give the main character of a book a name, but if you think about it, what purpose does a name serve? Isn't is said that a man's actions speak louder than his words? In this story, the man's actions go hand in hand with his words, to make him desired by some, feared and hated by others. The journey begins with the man fighting for his very education. Earning a scholarship meant to physically destroy the competition. It showed that to get an education he had to act the exact opposite of an educated man. He had to rely upon his own primitive brutality to insure his education. He was then mocked by having to recite a speech he was to memorize, which showed the total disrespect the people who were giving the scholarship had for the future students. After getting into school, a simple job turned into an unforeseen disaster that would change his life forever. He was to chauffeur Mr. Norton, a founder of the college he attended. Mr. Norton was a well educated but very ignorant man. He felt that the college was doing all of the good that could be done. He had no idea of the evils that dwelled upon the grounds. Dr. Bledsoe, the head of the college, had arranged for Mr. Norton to go for a tour of the grounds, but didn't expect for him to see ââ¬Å"everythingâ⬠at the college. Mr. Norton asked to see some of the more unseen areas of the college, so the driver had to oblige him. Their they met a man with an incestuous past. Mr. Norton was dumb founded, he had no idea something like this could happen at his college. This just shows the many evils we come across in our lives that appear like shadows, taking us by total surprise. The phrase, ââ¬Å"Out of sight, out of mindâ⬠, seems to hold great relevance. When you choose to ignore the bad things in life you become weak, and when they finally do hit you, you may never recover from the blow. The next destination they reach is the Golden Day, a hotel/brothel which exists because no one bothers to do anything about it. It's a symbol of what happens when problems are not kept in che... ... be a good trait, but it could get you into alot of trouble. A good example of this is how he trusted the Brotherhood to support him and his views. He was a strong character in the sense that through all of the hardships that he had faced throughout his journey he stuck with his ideas. The Invisible Man has many ties with reality in the sense that it shows how cruel and brutal life can be. Our main character worked hard to get into school only to have it taken away from him. The same happened to him when he got a job at the factory. The final and most devastating blow is dealt by the Brotherhood. They took him in as one of their own and made him feel welcome. The made it seem as though they were working for the same goals they he was. Only to betray him in the end and use him for their own misguided wants. This book is similar to the play Hamlet. Both of the main characters are strong yet naive. They both endure many tragedies. Although the ones in Hamlet are closely related to family, they both deceive the main characters to destroy their dreams. The main characters both fight back though, they defend their beliefs viciously never giving in to their enemies. rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-16971850489902298112020-01-16T14:03:00.001-08:002020-01-16T14:03:05.361-08:00Forward the Foundation Chapter 1421 Gleb Andorin gazed at Namarti through half-closed eyes. He never liked the man, but there were times when he liked him less than he usually did and this was one of those times. Why should Andorin, a Wyan of royal birth (that's what it amounted to, after all) have to work with this parvenu, this near-psychotic paranoid? Andorin knew why and he had to endure, even when Namarti was once again in the process of telling the story of how he had built up the movement during a period of ten years to its present pitch of perfection. Did he tell this to everyone, over and over? Or was it just Andorin who was his chosen vessel? Namarti's face seemed to shine with malignant glee as he said, in an odd singsong, as though it were a matter of rote, ââ¬Å"Year after year. I worked on those lines, even through hopelessness and uselessness, building an organization, chipping away at confidence in the government, creating and intensifying dissatisfaction. When there was the banking crisis and the week of the moratorium, I-ââ¬Å" He paused suddenly. ââ¬Å"I've told you this many times and you're sick of hearing it, aren't you?â⬠Andorin's lips twitched in a brief dry smile. Namarti was not such an idiot as not to know what a bore he was; he just couldn't help it. Andorin said, ââ¬Å"You've told me this many times.â⬠He allowed the remainder of the question to hang in the air, unanswered. The answer, after all, was an obvious affirmative. There was no need to face him with it. A slight flush crossed Namarti's sallow face. He said, ââ¬Å"But it could have gone on forever-the building, the chipping, without ever coming to a point-if I hadn't had the proper tool in my hands. And without any effort on my part, the tool came to me.â⬠ââ¬Å"The gods brought you Planchet,â⬠said Andorin neutrally. ââ¬Å"You're right. There will be a group of gardeners entering the Imperial Palace grounds soon.â⬠He paused and seemed to savor the thought. ââ¬Å"Men and women. Enough to serve as a mask for the handful of our operatives who will accompany them. Among them will be you-and Planchet. And what will make you and Planchet unusual is that you will be carrying blasters.â⬠ââ¬Å"Surely,â⬠said Andorin with deliberate malice behind a polite expression, ââ¬Å"we'll be stopped at the gates and held for questioning. Bringing an illicit blaster onto the Palace grounds-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"You won't be stopped,â⬠said Namarti, missing the malice. ââ¬Å"You won't be searched. That's been arranged. You will all be greeted as a matter of course by some Palace official. I don't know who would ordinarily be in charge of that task-the Third Assistant Chamberlain in Charge of Grass and Leaves, for all I know-but in this case, it will be Seldon himself. The great mathematician will hurry out to greet the new gardeners and welcome them to the grounds.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're sure of that, I suppose.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course, I am. It's all been arranged. He will learn, at more or less the last minute, that his foster son is among those listed as new gardeners and it will be impossible for him to refrain from coming out to see him. And when Seldon appears, Planchet will raise his blaster. Our people will raise the cry of ââ¬ËTreason!' In the confusion and hurly-burly, Planchet will kill Seldon and then you will kill Planchet. You will then drop your blaster and leave. There are those who will help you leave. It's been arranged.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is it absolutely necessary to kill Planchet?â⬠Namarti frowned. ââ¬Å"Why? Do you object to one killing and not to another? When Planchet recovers, do you wish him to tell the authorities all he knows about us? Besides, this is a family feud we are arranging. Don't forget that Planchet is, in actual fact, Raych Seldon. It will look as though the two had fired simultaneously-or as though Seldon had given orders that if his son made any hostile move, he was to be shot down. We will see to it that the family angle will be given full publicity. It will be reminiscent of the bad old days of the Bloody Emperor Manowell. The people of Trantor will surely be repelled by the sheer wickedness of the deed. That, piled on top of all the inefficiencies and breakdowns they've been witnessing and living through, will raise the cry for a new government-and no one will be able to refuse them, least of all the Emperor. And then we'll step in.â⬠ââ¬Å"Just like that?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, not just like that. I don't live in a dream world. There is likely to be some interim government, but it will fail. We'll see to it that it fails and we'll come out in the open and revive the old Joranumite arguments that the Trantorians have never forgotten. And in time-in not too much time-I will be First Minister.â⬠ââ¬Å"And I?â⬠ââ¬Å"Will eventually be the Emperor.â⬠Andorin said, ââ¬Å"The chance of all this working is small. This is arranged. That is arranged. The other thing is arranged. All of it has to come together and mesh perfectly or it will fail. Somewhere, someone is bound to mess up. It's an unacceptable risk.â⬠ââ¬Å"Unacceptable? For whom? For you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Certainly. You expect me to make certain that Planchet will kill his father and you expect me to then kill Planchet. Why me? Aren't there tools worth less than I who might more easily be risked?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, but to choose anyone else would make failure certain. Who but you has so much riding on this mission that there is no chance you will turn back in a fit of vapors at the last minute?â⬠ââ¬Å"The risk is enormous.â⬠ââ¬Å"Isn't it worth it to you? You're playing for the Imperial throne.â⬠ââ¬Å"And what risk are you taking, Chief? You will remain here, quite comfortable, and wait to hear the news.â⬠Namarti's lip curled. ââ¬Å"What a fool you are, Andorin! What an Emperor you will make! Do you suppose I take no risk because I will be here? If the gambit fails, if the plot miscarries, if some of our people are taken, do you think they won't tell everything they know? If you were somehow caught, would you face the tender treatment of the Imperial Guard without ever telling them about me? ââ¬Å"And with a failed assassination attempt at hand, do you suppose they won't comb Trantor to find me? Do you suppose that in the end they will fail to find me? And when they do find me, what do you suppose I will have to face at their hands? Risk? I run a worse risk than any of you, just sitting here doing nothing. It boils down to this, Andorin. Do you or do you not wish to be Emperor?â⬠Andorin said in a low voice, ââ¬Å"I wish to be Emperor.â⬠And so things were set in motion. 22 Raych had no trouble seeing that he was being treated with special care. The whole group of would-be gardeners was now quartered in one of the hotels in the Imperial Sector, although not one of the prime hotels, of course. The gardeners were an odd lot, from fifty different worlds, but Raych had little chance to speak to any of them. Andorin, without being too obvious about it, had managed to keep him apart from the others. Raych wondered why. It depressed him. In fact, he had been feeling somewhat depressed since he had left Wye. It interfered with his thinking process and he fought it-but not with entire success. Andorin was himself wearing rough clothes and was attempting to look like a workman. He would be playing the part of a gardener as a way of running the ââ¬Å"showâ⬠-whatever the ââ¬Å"showâ⬠might be. Raych felt ashamed that he had not been able to penetrate the nature of that ââ¬Å"show.â⬠They had closed in on him and prevented all communication, so he hadn't even had the chance to warn his father. They might be doing this for every Trantorian who had been pushed into the group, for all he knew, just as an extreme precaution. Raych estimated that there might be a dozen Trantorians among them, all of them Namarti's people, of course, men and women both. What puzzled him was that Andorin treated him with what was almost affection. He monopolized him, insisted on having all his meals with him, treated him quite differently from the way in which he treated anyone else. Could it be because they had shared Manella? Raych did not know enough about the mores of the Wye Sector to be able to tell whether there might not be a polyandrous touch to their society. If two men shared a woman, did that make them, in a way, fraternal? Did it create a bond? Raych had never heard of such a thing, but he knew better than to suppose he had a grasp of even a tiny fraction of the infinite subtleties of galactic societies-even of Trantorian societies. But now that his mind had brought him back to Manella, he dwelled on her for a while. He missed her terribly and it occurred to him that missing her might be the cause of his depression, though, to tell the truth, what he was feeling now, as he was finishing lunch with Andorin, was almost despair-though he could think of no cause for it. Manella! She had said she wanted to visit the Imperial Sector and presumably she could wheedle Andorin to her liking. He was desperate enough to ask a foolish question. ââ¬Å"Mr. Andorin, I keep wondering if maybe you brought Miss Dubanqua along with you. Here, to the Imperial Sector.â⬠Andorin looked utterly astonished. Then he laughed gently. ââ¬Å"Manella? Do you see her doing any gardening? Or even pretending she could? No no, Manella is one of those women invented for our quiet moments. She has no function at all, otherwise.â⬠then ââ¬Å"Why do you ask, Planchet?â⬠** Raych shrugged. ââ¬Å"I don't know. It's sort of dull around here. I sort of thought-â⬠His voice trailed away. Andorin watched him carefully. Finally he said, ââ¬Å"Surely you're not of the opinion that it matters much which woman you are involved with? I assure you it doesn't matter to her which man she's involved with. Once this is over, there will be other women. Plenty of them.â⬠ââ¬Å"When will this be over?â⬠ââ¬Å"Soon. And you're going to be part of it in a very important way.â⬠Andorin watched Raych narrowly. Raych said, ââ¬Å"How important? Aren't I gonna be just-a gardener?â⬠His voice sounded hollow and he found himself unable to put a spark in it. ââ¬Å"You'll be more than that, Planchet. You'll be going in with a blaster.â⬠ââ¬Å"With a what?â⬠ââ¬Å"A blaster.â⬠ââ¬Å"I never held a blaster. Not in my whole life.â⬠ââ¬Å"There's nothing to it. You lift it. You point it. You close the contact and someone dies.â⬠ââ¬Å"I can't kill anyone.â⬠ââ¬Å"I thought you were one of us, that you would do anything for the cause.â⬠ââ¬Å"I didn't mean-kill.â⬠Raych couldn't seem to collect his thoughts. Why must he kill? What did they really have in mind for him? And how would he be able to alert the Imperial Guard before the killing would be carried out? Andorin's face hardened suddenly, an instant conversion from friendly interest to stern decision. He said, ââ¬Å"You must kill.â⬠Raych gathered all his strength. ââ¬Å"No. I ain't gonna kill nobody. That's final.â⬠Andorin said, ââ¬Å"Planchet, you will do as you are told.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not murder.â⬠ââ¬Å"Even murder.â⬠ââ¬Å"How you gonna make me?â⬠ââ¬Å"I shall simply tell you to.â⬠Raych felt dizzy. What made Andorin so confident? He shook his head. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠Andorin said, ââ¬Å"We've been feeding you, Planchet, ever since you left Wye. I made sure you ate with me. I supervised your diet. Especially the meal you just ate.â⬠Raych felt the horror rise within him. He suddenly understood. ââ¬Å"Desperance!â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly,â⬠said Andorin. ââ¬Å"You're a sharp devil, Planchet.â⬠ââ¬Å"It's illegal.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, of course. So's murder.â⬠Raych knew about desperance. It was a chemical modification of a perfectly harmless tranquilizer. The modified form, however, did not produce tranquillity but despair. It had been outlawed because of its use in mind control, though there were persistent rumors that the Imperial Guard used it. Andorin said, as though it were not hard to read Raych's mind, ââ¬Å"It's called desperance because that's an old word meaning ââ¬Ëhopelessness.' I think you're feeling hopeless.â⬠ââ¬Å"Never,â⬠whispered Raych. ââ¬Å"Very resolute of you, but you can't fight the chemical. And the more hopeless you feel, the more effective the drug.â⬠ââ¬Å"No chance.â⬠ââ¬Å"Think about it, Planchet. Namarti recognized you at once, even without your mustache. He knows you are Raych Seldon and, at my direction, you are going to kill your father.â⬠Raych muttered, ââ¬Å"Not before I kill you.â⬠He rose from his chair. There should be no problem at all in this. Andorin might be taller, but he was slender and clearly no athlete. Raych would break him in two with one arm-but he swayed as he rose. He shook his head, but it wouldn't clear. Andorin rose, too, and backed away. He drew his right hand from where it had been resting within his left sleeve. He was holding a weapon. He said pleasantly, ââ¬Å"I came prepared. I have been informed of your prowess as a Heliconian Twister and there will be no hand-to-hand combat.â⬠He looked down at his weapon. ââ¬Å"This is not a blaster,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I can't afford to have you killed before you accomplish your task. It's a neuronic whip. Much worse, in a way. I will aim at your left shoulder and, believe me, the pain will be so excruciating that the world's greatest stoic would not be able to endure it.â⬠Raych, who had been advancing slowly and grimly, stopped abruptly. He had been twelve years old when he had had a taste-a small one-of a neuronic whip. Once struck, no one ever forgets the pain, however long he lives, however full of incidents his life is. Andorin said, ââ¬Å"Moreover, I will use full strength so that the nerves in your upper arms will be stimulated first into unbearable pain and then damaged into uselessness. You will never use your left arm again. I will spare the right so you can handle the blaster. Now if you sit down and accept matters, as you must, you may keep both arms. Of course, you must eat again so your desperance level increases. Your situation will only worsen.â⬠Raych felt the drug-induced despair settle over him and that despair served, in itself, to deepen the effect. His vision was turning double and he could think of nothing to say. Raych only knew that he would have to do what Andorin would tell him to do. He had played the game and he had lost. 23 ââ¬Å"No!â⬠Hari Seldon was almost violent. ââ¬Å"I don't want you out there, Dors.â⬠Dors Venabili stared back at him with an expression as firm as his own. ââ¬Å"Then I won't let you go, either, Hari.â⬠ââ¬Å"I must be there.â⬠ââ¬Å"It is not your place. It is the Gardener First-Class who must greet these new people.â⬠ââ¬Å"So it is. But Gruber can't do it. He's a broken man.â⬠ââ¬Å"He must have an assistant of some sort. Or let the old Chief Gardener do it. He holds the office till the end of the year.â⬠ââ¬Å"The old Chief Gardener is too ill. Besidesâ⬠-Seldon hesitated-ââ¬Å"there are ringers among the gardeners. Trantorians. They're here, for some reason. I have the names of every one of them.â⬠ââ¬Å"Have them taken into custody, then. Every last one of them. It's simple. Why are you making it so complex?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because we don't know why they're here. Something's up. I don't see what twelve gardeners can do, but-No, let me rephrase that. I can see a dozen things they can do, but I don't know which one of those things they've planned. We will, indeed, take them into custody, but I must know more about everything before it's done. ââ¬Å"We have to know enough to winkle out everyone in the conspiracy from top to bottom and we must know enough of what they're doing to be able to make the proper punishment stick. I don't want to get twelve men and women on what is essentially a misdemeanor charge. They'll plead desperation, the need for a job. They'll complain that it isn't fair for Trantorians to be excluded. They'll get plenty of sympathy and we'll be left looking like fools. We must give them a chance to convict themselves of more than that. Besides-ââ¬Å" There was a long pause and Dors said wrathfully, ââ¬Å"Well, what's the new ââ¬Ëbesides'?â⬠Seldon's voice lowered. ââ¬Å"One of the twelve is Raych, using the alias Planchet.â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"Why are you surprised? I sent him to Wye to infiltrate the Joranumite movement and he's succeeded in infiltrating something. I have every faith in him. If he's there, he knows why he's there and he must have some sort of plan to put a spoke in the wheel. But I want to be there, too. I want to see him. I want to be in a position to help him if I can.â⬠ââ¬Å"If you want to help him, have fifty guards of the Palace standing shoulder to shoulder on either side of your gardeners.â⬠ââ¬Å"No. Again, we'll end up with nothing. The Imperial Guard will be in place but not in evidence. The gardeners in question must think they have a clear hand to do whatever it is they plan to do. Before they can do so, but after they have made it quite plain what they intend-we'll have them.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's risky. It's risky for Raych.â⬠ââ¬Å"Risks are something we have to take. There's more riding on this than individual lives.â⬠ââ¬Å"That is a heartless thing to say.â⬠ââ¬Å"You think I have no heart? Even if it broke, my concern would have to be with psycho-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Don't say it.â⬠She turned away, as if in pain. ââ¬Å"I understand,â⬠said Seldon, ââ¬Å"but you mustn't be there. Your presence would be so inappropriate that the conspirators will suspect we know too much and will abort their plan. I don't want their plan aborted.â⬠He paused, then said softly, ââ¬Å"Dors, you say your job is to protect me. That comes before protecting Raych and you know that. I wouldn't insist on it, but to protect me is to protect psychohistory and the entire human species. That must come first. What I have of psychohistory tells me that I, in turn, must protect the center at all costs and that is what I am trying to do. Do you understand?â⬠Dors said, ââ¬Å"I understand,â⬠then turned away from him. Seldon thought: And I hope I'm right. If he weren't, she would never forgive him. Far worse, he would never forgive himself-psychohistory or not. 24 They were lined up beautifully, feet spread apart, hands behind their hacks, every one in a natty green uniform, loosely fitted and with wide pockets. There was very little gender differential and one could only guess that some of the shorter ones were women. The hoods covered whatever hair they had, but then, gardeners were supposed to clip their hair quite short-either sex-and there could be no facial hair. Why that should be, one couldn't say. The word ââ¬Å"traditionâ⬠covered it all, as it covered so many things, some useful, some foolish. Facing them was Mandell Gruber, flanked on either side by an assistant. Gruber was trembling, his wide-opened eyes glazed. Hari Seldon's lips tightened. If Gruber could but manage to say, ââ¬Å"The Emperor's gardeners greet you all,â⬠that would be enough. Seldon himself would then take over. His eyes swept over the new contingent and he located Raych. His heart jumped a bit. It was the mustacheless Raych in the front row, standing more rigid than the rest, staring straight ahead. His eyes did not move to meet Seldon's; he showed no sign of recognition, however subtle. Good, thought Seldon. He's not supposed to. He's giving nothing away. Gruber muttered a weak welcome and Seldon jumped in. He advanced with an easy stride, putting himself immediately before Gruber, and said, ââ¬Å"Thank you, Gardener First-Class. Men and women, gardeners of the Emperor, you are to undertake an important task. You will be responsible for the beauty and health of the only open land on our great world of Trantor, capital of the Galactic Empire. You will see to it that if we don't have the endless vistas of open undomed worlds, we will have a small jewel here that will outshine anything else in the Empire. ââ¬Å"You will all be under Mandell Gruber, who will shortly become Chief Gardener. He will report to me, when necessary, and I will report to the Emperor. This means, as you can all see, that you will be only three levels removed from the Imperial presence and you will always be under his benign watch. I am certain that even now he is surveying us from the Small Palace, his personal home, which is the building you see to the right-the one with the opal-layered dome-and that he is pleased with what he sees. ââ¬Å"Before you start work, of course, you will all undertake a course of training that will make you entirely familiar with the grounds and its needs. You will-ââ¬Å" He had, by this time, moved, almost stealthily, to a point directly in front of Raych, who still remained motionless, unblinking. Seldon tried not to look unnaturally benign and then a slight frown crossed his face. The person directly behind Raych looked familiar. He might have gone unrecognized if Seldon had not studied his hologram. Wasn't that Gleb Andorin of Wye? Raych's patron in Wye, in fact? What was he doing here? Andorin must have noticed Seldon's sudden regard, for he muttered something between scarcely opened lips and Raych's right arm, moving forward from behind his back, plucked a blaster out of the wide pocket of his green doublet. So did Andorin. Seldon felt himself going into near-shock. How could blasters have been allowed onto the grounds? Confused, he barely heard the cries of ââ¬Å"Treason!â⬠and the sudden noise of running and shouting. All that really occupied Seldon's mind was Raych's blaster pointing directly at him and Raych looking at him without any sign of recognition. Seldon's mind filled with horror as he realized that his son was going to shoot and that he himself was only seconds from death. 25 A blaster, despite its name, does not ââ¬Å"blastâ⬠in the proper sense of the term. It vaporizes and blows out an interior and-if anything-causes an implosion. There is a soft sighing sound, leaving what appears to be a ââ¬Å"blastedâ⬠object. Hari Seldon did not expect to hear that sound. He expected only death. It was, therefore, with surprise that he heard the distinctive soft sighing sound and he blinked rapidly as he looked down at himself, slackjawed. He was alive? (He thought it as a question, not a statement.) Raych was still standing there, his blaster pointing forward, his eyes glazed. He was absolutely motionless, as though some motive power had ceased. Behind him was the crumpled body of Andorin, fallen in a pool of blood, and standing next to him, blaster in hand, was a gardener. The hood had slipped away; the gardener was clearly a woman with freshly clipped hair. She allowed herself a glance at Seldon and said, ââ¬Å"Your son knows me as Manella Dubanqua. I'm a security officer. Do you want my reference number, First Minister?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠said Seldon faintly. Imperial Guard had converged on the scene. ââ¬Å"My son! What's wrong with my son?â⬠ââ¬Å"Desperance, I think,â⬠said Manella. ââ¬Å"That can be washed out eventually.â⬠She reached forward to take the blaster out of Raych's hand. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry I didn't act sooner. I had to wait for an overt move and, when it came, it almost caught me napping.â⬠ââ¬Å"I had the same trouble. We must take Raych to the Palace hospital.â⬠A confused noise suddenly emanated from the Small Palace. It occurred to Seldon that the Emperor was, indeed, watching the proceedings and, if so, he must be grandly furious, indeed. ââ¬Å"Take care of my son, Miss Dubanqua,â⬠said Seldon. ââ¬Å"I must see the Emperor.â⬠He set off at an undignified run through the chaos on the Great Lawns and dashed into the Small Palace without ceremony. Cleon could scarcely grow any angrier over that. And there, with an appalled group watching in stupor-there, on the semicircular stairway-was the body of His Imperial Majesty, Cleon I, smashed all but beyond recognition. His rich Imperial robes now served as a shroud. Cowering against the wall, staring stupidly at the horrified faces surrounding him, was Mandell Gruber. Seldon felt he could take no more. He took in the blaster lying at Gruber's feet. It had been Andorin's, he was sure. He asked softly, ââ¬Å"Gruber, what have you done?â⬠Gruber, staring at him, babbled, ââ¬Å"Everyone screaming and yelling. I thought, Who would know? They would think someone else had killed the Emperor. But then I couldn't run.â⬠ââ¬Å"But, Gruber. Why?â⬠ââ¬Å"So I wouldn't have to be Chief Gardener.â⬠And he collapsed. Seldon stared in shock at the unconscious Gruber. Everything had worked out by the narrowest of margins. He himself was alive. Raych was alive. Andorin was dead and the Joranumite Conspiracy would now be hunted down to the last person. The center would have held, just as psychohistory had dictated. And then one man, for a reason so trivial as to defy analysis, had killed the Emperor. And now, thought Seldon in despair, what do we do? What happens next? rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-77715099882014931052020-01-08T10:26:00.001-08:002020-01-08T10:26:02.884-08:00Latino Communities Structural And Social Issues And How... Amanda Tran Professor Alexandro Gradilla CHIC 305 13 January 2015 Latino Communities: Structural and Social Issues and How They Thrive For many Latino families, their image is misunderstood. The majority of Americans analyze Latino communities focusing on the individual. Asking individual questions such as what did that person do wrong to be poor? Why is that individual immigrating into the US? The real question we should be asking is what factors made them immigrate to a different country in the first place. After all, ââ¬Å"nobody likes to leave their homeâ⬠says Juan Gonzalez from the documentary Harvest of Empire. In the documentary, Harvest of Empire Journalist and author of the book Juan Gonzalez, ââ¬Å"Harvest of Empireâ⬠discusses the controversial issue in America of Latino immigration. You can sell the patent or rights to your invention outright. You can license your invention. You can produce and market and sell your invention yourself. Selling Outright Selling your intellectual property patent means that you have permanently transferred ownership of your property to another person or company for an agreed-upon fee. All future commercial opportunities including royalties will no longer be yours. License Your Invention Licensing means that you will continue to own your own invention, however, you rent out the rights to make, use, or sell your invention. You can give an exclusive license to one party, or a non-exclusive license to more than one party. You can set a time limit on the license or not. In exchange for the rights to your intellectual property, you can charge a flat fee, or collect a royalty for each unit sold, or a combination of the two. It should be noted that royalties are a much smaller percentage than most inventors would guess they should be, often under three percent for first-time inventors. That fact should not be surprising, the licensing party is taking a financial risk and it is quite an undertaking to manufacture, market, advertise, and distribute any product. More about licensing in our next lesson. Do It Yourself To manufacture, market, advertise, and distribute your own intellectual property is a large enterprise. Ask yourself, do you have the spirit necessary to become an entrepreneur? In a later lesson, we will discuss business and business plans and provide resources for conducting your own. For those of you who do wish to become your own entrepreneur and start and raise capital for a serious business, this may be your next stop: entrepreneur tutorials. Independent inventors may decide to hire help for marketing or other aspects of promoting their invention. Before making any commitments to promoters and promotion firms, you should check on their reputation before making any commitments. Remember, not all firms are legitimate. It is best to be wary of any firm that promises too much and/or costs too much. rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-72418156704723395772019-12-23T02:39:00.001-08:002019-12-23T02:39:04.083-08:00Gargoyle Essay - 928 Words Gargoyle A Gargoyle is a grotesquely carved human or animal figure found on an architectural structure, originally designed (believe it or not) to serve as a spout to throw rainwater clear of a building. They later became strictly ornamental and assumed many forms. This harks back to the 5th Century Celts who were, in fact, head-hunters. They worshipped the heads that they had severed, believing them to hold a powerful force. If you make eye contact with one, you may find out that this is true. Figures of ambiguous gender and species are frequently encountered in the world of gargoyles. Ancient people were no different from people today in finding amalgrams of male/female or human/animal bodies somewhat frightening. Pagan religion existed to confront and surmount chaos and danger. Chaos is represented by lifeforms which do not fit into known categories. You will find that an inordinate number of gargoyles have their mouths wide open and their tongues protruding. Why? The mouth pulled open is a frequent symbol of devouring giants. In order to convey size in a small sculpture, much smaller figures are placed next to the giant. The act of pulling the mouth open is a threatening gesture which serves to remind us that we are vulnerable to forces larger than ourselves. The Celts often depicted a human head entwined with foliage. Branches coming from the mouth or crowning the head were a sign of divinity. Often, the branches are of the oak tree which was sacred to the Druids. He starts off his speech by telling a story having the idea that even the most ââ¬Å"important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about. â⬠He talks about living in the adult world that these soon to be graduates will enter and how it can be ere dull at times. We will write a custom essay sample on This is Water Summary Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now And how learning about how to think about the choice we make in our life, the choices we make will impact our life whether it be a good impact, or a bad impact. Wallace delivers this speech (in a way to get these graduates not necessarily discouraged) giving the former students a face of reality that life is dull when you go through the same thing every day. And that when people go through the same thing ââ¬Å"day in and day outâ⬠people tend to forget about the others around us. When forgetting about the other people around us occurs, Wallace believes that makes us believe that we are the ââ¬Å"center of the universe. â⬠This way of thinking as Wallace states is to be our ââ¬Å"default settingâ⬠where we tend to block everyone our except for ourselves and if anyone gets in our way, then they must the ones at fault. Wallace also states, ââ¬Å"if you really learn to pay attention, then you will know there are other options. â⬠We have the choice to think of those other options, but we also have he choice to not think of those other options. Choosing the option to pay attention to the others around us and not be a ââ¬Å"prisoner of our own brainâ⬠could possibly let ourselves live happier lives. Having awareness as Wallace stated, â⬠Is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive In the adult world day In and day out. But, your education really Is the Job of a lifetime. â⬠In conclusion, Wallace believes that we have choices to be aware of and to really think of the choices we make. Most members of this group are born into affluent families. Themajority of top leaders in the United States come from this privileged group. The power elite utilizes a variety of resources to dictate public policy. Theseindividuals tend to hold top management positions within big corporations. Thesecorporations are used as a powerful tool to dominate the political arena. Corporations are granted immense power, which they use, to protect their owninterests, as well as, shape the interests of ordinary citizens. Theleadership role that business has in the economy gives executives of largecorporations an unusual kind and degree of influence over governmental policymaking. (Lindblom 1993:p91) The economic control of corporations plays anessential role in public policy. Depending on how they choose to play the game, large corporations dictate to economic conditions. Politicians must accommodatecorporate interests to protect our sensitive economy. These accommodations canbe called corporatism. Big businesses receive a privileged position bydonating huge amounts of money and support to politicians and their politicalparties. This monetary support buys access into the system. This access, knownas corporate welfare, can be achieved in the forms of favored rates on goods andcommodities, higher interest bond issues, tariff protections, emergency funding, tax break s and incentives, guaranteed investments, and weak safety standards. The rewards are endless, and they must be worth something because corporationsspend a tremendous amount of money to obtain them. Corporations have existed asearly as the eighteenth century. The framework of the constitution protectscorporations through its interpretation of property rights. Our constitutionwas founded on a principle that the rights of people with property have to beprivileged. It is true that the framework defended the rights of people, butrights were distributed, even more so, to people who owned property. The framersof the constitution were hardly democratic. They represented their own, personal, privileged, economic interests. Our founding fathers had a directinterest to establish a government that would protect their holdings andinvestments. The guiding light of the constitution, that still exists today, isclass interest. Privileged powers are protected by, and set a side for, thepower elite. In the United States, affluence and power is attained by wealth andsocia l status. Unavoidably, this power is passed onto the common citizen. Thepower elite is composed of men whose positions enable them to transcend theordinary environments of ordinary men and women; they are in positions to makedecisions having major consequences. Whether they do or do not make suchdecisions is less important than the fact that they do occupy such pivotalpositions; their failure to act, their failure to make decisions, is itself anact that is often of greater consequence than the decisions they do make. (Mills, 1956: p.73) Corporations exercise their power to protect their owninterests. In doing so, they effect the economical, social, and politicalmake-up of society. This power is unique, and is reserved for only a few. TheUnited States is admired for its ideals of equality and opportunity. One canview our system as a multitude of groups and associations that organizeopenly and freely, to compete with each other for the advancement of suchpurposes as their members may wish.(Miliband, 1969:p58) Yet, in reality, theUnited States is a far cry from being democratic. The problem is that groups donot compete on a level playing field. Large corporations enjoy a massivesuperiority compared to smaller businesses, small interest groups, grassrootsorganizations, and individual voters. It is the tightly woven relationshipbetween big business and government that prevents true democracy. Economicinfluence is a magic wand used by large corporations to get their wishesgranted. According to Ralph Mi liband, businesses control the key areas ofeconomic life which makes it extremely difficult for governments to impose uponit policies to which it is firmly opposed. (1969:p59) In other words, corporations dictate policy whether government likes it or not. Businessdecisions have a yielding effect on the state of the economy. Choosing todisinvest, downsize, relocate, or, decrease production, often has a negativeimpact on the economy. According to Lindblom, a poor economy will negativelyaffect voters more than anything else, and therefore, politicians must be quickto respond to it. Politicians must pay special attention to the businesscommunity. (p.91) For, if business is governments customer, then is businessalways right? Miliband suggests, that in abstract, the array of powers andinfluences utilized by business are combated by the equated powers andinfluences obtained by government. (p.61) In reality, government has minimalresources for self-protection. Big corporations are the backbo ne of government. .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 , .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .postImageUrl , .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 , .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5:hover , .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5:visited , .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5:active { border:0!important; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5:active , .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5 .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua9360e0e499eec89f6151dd4856a7ec5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Windshield Survey EssayWithout corporate donations, politicians would not be able to effectively securepositions in government. The success of a political campaign highly depends uponefficient funding. As politicians except huge contributions to enhance theirchances of winning, corporations contribute money to enhance their personalinterests. Perhaps corporations should not be regarded with a negativeconnotation. Rather, the system itself should be blamed for encouraging thesecorrupted relationships. Lindblom suggests that the relationships betweenbusinesses and government are reciprocal. These relationships lend to the ideathat government makes certain choices that benefi t corporations, with hopes toassist the economy. Many choices made by government are favored towards thelarge corporations. However, these very decisions persuade corporations toreciprocate decisions that benefit the economy. For, it is when the economy ison hard times, that citizens scrutinize their representatives. As alreadystated, corporations can choose to negatively impact the economy by decreasingproductivity, mobilizing outside of the country, downsizing, and, in turn, leadthe United States into a recession. To guard their prominent positions, politicians are forced to represent the interests of corporations. Corporationswill continue to play an integral role in our political system because so muchemphasis is placed on the economy. Free enterprise and public policy areindivisible. One cannot be separated from the other. Instead, society must cometo terms with the idea that politics is business, business is dirty, andtherefore politics is a dirty business. This is not to say t hat the ordinarycitizen always loses. Certain policies that deal with issues, such as health andthe environment, manage to defeat big business. One example, used by Lindblom,is the National Clean Air Act of 1990. Despite the major efforts ofcorporations, policy reforms were initiated that hindered big businesses, tobenefit the environment. The privileged position that corporations receive makessense. These groups participate more. They are more actively involved in theprocess than any other group. Large corporations utilize their resources to fundinterest groups, form special relationships with politicians, and are moreinformed than the ordinary citizen. Their access places them into a uniqueposition, whereas, large corporations are able to browbeat government. Out offear, government is forced to share decision-making with corporate bullies. Aslong as this relationship continues, democratic policy-making will be animpossible goal to attain. Corporate giants will continue to interfer e withpolicy initiatives that fight pollution, encourage equality, heighten safetystandards, and improve our overall quality of life. For money runs this country, and the one with the most money usually wins. Bibliography1. Lindblom, Charles E. and Woodhouse, Edward J., The Policy-Making Process(1993) New Jersey, Prentice Hall. Historians know that the Industrial Revolution made Europe wealthy. An imp rattan question is was it like to live through it? Historians are divided over what hap penned to wages during the Industrial Revolution. Most agree that they did increase; the quests on is, when. It is hard to say when because wages change constantly due to inflation and the w ages Of workers in the industrial revolution were paid informally leaving no real records behind. Luckily for researchers Britain is one of the best countries for keeping historical records such as wages that were paid out. Using the information from British records it can be concluded that wages rose after 1840. Some even claim that wages doubled between 1840 and 1910 beck cause the technological improvements lead to higher levels in labor productivity. However, quality does not only refer to money and wages, it also involves pee pleas health. One way to measure health is to study peoples heights at the time b cause well nourished people tend to be taller. During the Industrial Revolution, people w ho did less manual labor and who were less afflicted by disease tended to be taller. Life expect icy is another way researchers can accurately measure the living standards of the time. Life expel stance is calculated by looking at death registrars. If you know the distribution of ages at which pee pole die, you can work out the most likely age to which people will live. I agree with the points made in this article and I find the fact that we can use height to measure quality of life interesting. rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-78275438914940306462019-11-25T14:00:00.001-08:002019-11-25T14:00:04.387-08:00The History of the America First Committee of 1940The History of the America First Committee of 1940 More than 75 years before President Donald Trump made it a key part of his election campaign, the doctrine of ââ¬Å"America Firstâ⬠was on the minds of so many prominent Americans that they formed a special committee to make it happen. An outgrowth of the American isolationist movement, the America First Committee first convened on September 4, 1940, with a primary goal of keeping America out of World War II being fought at the time mainly in Europe and Asia. With a peak paid membership of 800,000 people, the America First Committee (AFC) became one of the largest organized anti-war groups in American history. The AFC disbanded on December 10, 1941, three days after the Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, thrust America into the war. Events Leading to the America First Committee In September 1939, Germany, under Adolph Hitler, invaded Poland, precipitating war in Europe. By 1940, only Great Britain possessed a large enough military and enough money to resist the Nazi conquest. Most of the smaller European nations had been overrun. France had been occupied by German forces and the Soviet Union was taking advantage of a nonaggression agreement with Germany to expand its interests in Finland.à While a majority of Americans felt the entire world would be a safer place if Great Britain defeated Germany, they were hesitant to enter the war and repeat the loss of American lives they had so recently experienced by taking part in the last European conflict ââ¬â World War I. The AFC Goes to War With Roosevelt This hesitancy to enter another European war inspired the U.S. Congress to enact the Neutrality Acts of the 1930s, greatly restricting the U.S. federal governmentââ¬â¢s ability to provide assistance in the form of troops, arms, or war materials to any of the nations involved in the war. President Franklin Roosevelt, who had opposed, but signed, the Neutrality Acts, employed non-legislative tactics like his ââ¬Å"Destroyers for Basesâ⬠plan to support the British war effort without actually violating the letter of the Neutrality Acts. The America First Committee fought President Roosevelt at every turn. By 1941, the AFCââ¬â¢s membership had exceeded 800,000 and boasted charismatic and influential leaders including national hero Charles A. Lindbergh. Joining Lindbergh were conservatives, like Colonel Robert McCormick, owner of the Chicago Tribune; liberals, like socialist Norman Thomas; and staunch isolationists, like Senator Burton Wheeler of Kansas and the anti-Semitic Father Edward Coughlin. In late 1941, the AFC fiercely opposed President Rooseveltââ¬â¢s Lend-Lease amendment authorizing the president to send arms and war materials to Britain, France, China, the Soviet Union, and other threatened nations without payment. In speeches delivered across the nation, Charles A. Lindbergh argued that Rooseveltââ¬â¢s support of England was sentimental in nature, driven to some extent by Rooseveltââ¬â¢s long friendship with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Lindbergh argued that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for Britain alone to defeat Germany without at least a million soldiersà and that Americaââ¬â¢s participation in the effort would be disastrous.à The doctrine that we must enter the wars of Europe in order to defend America will be fatal to our nation if we follow it, said Lindbergh in 1941. As War Swells, Support for AFC Shrinks Despite the AFCââ¬â¢s opposition and lobbying effort, Congress passed the Lend-Lease Act, giving Roosevelt broad powers to supply the Allies with arms and war materials without committing U.S. troops. Public and congressional support for the AFC eroded even further in June 1941, when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. By late 1941, with no sign of the Allies being able to stop the Axis advances and the perceived threat of an invasion of the U.S. growing, the influence of the AFC was fading rapidly. Pearl Harbor Spells the End for the AFC The last traces of support for U.S. neutrality and the America First Committee dissolved with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Just four days after the attack, the AFC disbanded. In a final statement issued on December 11, 1941, the Committee stated that while its policies might have prevented the Japanese attack, the war had come to America and it had thus become the duty of America to work for the united goal of defeating the Axis powers. Following the demise of the AFC, Charles Lindbergh joined the war effort. While remaining a civilian, Lindbergh flew more than 50 combat missions in the Pacific theater with the 433rd Fighter Squadron. After the war, Lindbergh often traveled to Europe to assist with the U.S. effort to rebuild and revitalize the continent. rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-66836909216608790792019-11-21T21:24:00.001-08:002019-11-21T21:24:03.109-08:00Applying Problem Solving Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 wordsApplying Problem Solving - Essay Example There are many methods, which can be used to find a perfect solution to any specific problem. Two of the most widely used methods are persuasive thinking and scientific thinking. In this paper, I will show how I made use of these methods to solve some problems, which occurred in my life. After I got my graduation degree from a university, I decided to do job to earn some money and get professional experience. I applied in a number of companies for the job but did not succeed to get a suitable job in accordance with my educational qualifications. Some companies called me for interviews. Wherever I went for the interviews, the selection committee members required some professional experience, which I did not have at that time. In my home city, I applied in almost every renowned company but did not succeed in finding a good job. After almost six months of job search, I found a job in a marketing firm located far away from my living place. I was recruited in the department of outdoor sales and my salary was very less as compared to my educational qualifications. The salary was so less that it was very hard for me to save any money for my family. I was not satisfied with that job. I did that job for almost a year when I decided to go abroad in order to find a better employment. My parents did not support my decision of moving abroad and insisted me to remain in my home country and continue my job search. In the problem, which I discussed above, I made use of persuasive thinking to convince my parents. I had two main reasons of going abroad for employment. One reason was to find a better employment while the second reason was the huge difference between the economy levels of my home country and the country where I was planning to go for employment. My parents were not supporting my decision initially as they insisted me not to go abroad. I told them that it would be wastage of my precious time rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-20585448164346147892019-11-20T17:28:00.001-08:002019-11-20T17:28:06.030-08:00IHRM and Ethical and Moral Leadership - Case Study Report EssayIHRM and Ethical and Moral Leadership - Case Study Report - Essay Example In this respect, labour flow is considered to be an important factor making the development of global economy at large. It has been perceived that the labour forces on a global context are recognised to be facing inequality problem with the development of technologies as well as ââ¬Ëforeign direct investmentââ¬â¢ (FDI). Companies in the worldwide market segments are seemed to be demanding more skilled labour in order to develop their overall business or operational performance (Bowles, 2009). In this modern era, it can be viewed that companies normally seeks employing low-paid skilled labour forces for lessening operational costs which resulted in raising the problem of unemployment in various business market segments. Additionally, with this concern, the problem of inequality in income has also been raised in the worldwide context. In this regard, migration of labour forces is recognised to be the imperative factor which is accountable for loss of jobs as well as inequality of wages amid developed countries (The IMF, 2008). With growing aspect of globalisation, multinational corporations (MNCs) are observed to devise policies as well as principles with the objective of enhancing labour standards. Companies formulated ââ¬Ëcorporate social responsibilityââ¬â¢ (CSR) related policies with the aim of performing business activities in a legal as well as ethical manner. The CSR policies of companies also ensure that they are quite able to meet and accomplish the expectations of the stakeholders. MNCs seek that the policies and principles for the CSR are formulated in accordance with the national as well as international labour standards. Moreover, labour forces are required to be provided with better human rights principles as well as working environment. There are certain provisions on the basis of which companies are required to acquire labour forces. In this respect, MNCs with better CSR and business codes will be facilitated with the opportunity of ex ecuting business operations effectively with minimised inequality in relation to wages and culture among others (UNCTAD, 2012). In this similar context, ââ¬ËInternational Labour Organisationââ¬â¢ (ILO) has formulated as well as implemented policies and principles with the objective of promoting enhanced labour standards with the assistance of international contracts. The standards as well as policies that formulated by ILO are required to be adopted by MNCs with the intention of offering better working environment and rights to labour forces. The standards of ILO signify that MNCs should not acquire labour forces in a forced manner. MNCs should ensure that children under the age of 14 or 15 are not employed. MNCs are also required to ascertain that employees are not discriminated and are provided with the right of collective bargaining. There should not be any abuse as well as harassment in the working environment. The employees should be provided with better healthcare facili ties and must be offered with equitable and minimum wages (Xiaoyong, 2006; ILO, 2003). According to this theory, originally, there existed a big cloud of gas and dust, which became unstable, probably because of the shock waves originating from the nearby density waves or supernova. The part of the cloud, which was the densest begun collapsing under the force of gravity. This force of gravity, then pulled the gas and dust towards the center point of the cloud. The cloud was forced to take a spherical shape, thereby becoming a protostar. Increased centrifugal force or rotation of gas and dust caused this cloud to form a flattened shape or accretion disk around it (Abruzzo 46). According to this hypothesis, this explains why the rotating disk if gas and dust is solar Nebula. A number of studies have sought to confirm this hypothesis, however, the practically of th is hypothesis has never been illustrated as it has been illustrated in the American Museum of national History (AMHH). American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) has been one of the world prominent scientific institutions, known for its exhibitions and collections, which illuminate of the Earths evolutions, right from the origin of the present planet to its present form. AMNH is New York Icon. I have always wondered how everything came into being. The mystery of life and therein has been a closely contested subject. Besides, it has always been my dream to visit AMNH and learn of the scientific evidence located in meteorites supports Solar Nebula Hypothesis. Recently, I made my way into the AMNH. The Museum is located at Central park West on the 79th Street and is easily accessed by public transport. Driving to the museum, I got inclined to give a benefit of doubt, though I had no basic grasp of the real evidence for the Solar Nebular Hypothesis. The main entrance to the Rose Center for Earth and Space is situated at 81st Street between the Columbus Avenue and Central Park West. Although I have a perso nal car, I chose public transport perhaps to evade the huge parking fees. When I arrived at 10 am, I was surprised to find many uniformed police at the entrance, directing traffic. The heavy police presence depicted the 9-11post security situations. Perhaps, this shows the importance of the structure under close security. I marveled at the structureà it was huge yet with a modern style. While, at the museum, I sought direction to the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites. The hall is situated on the far end of the AMNH bordering Sacker Educational library to the south and The Hall of Minerals to the East. First, we watched a movie in the Meteorite Theater, located in the Hall along the Planet Wall display. The movie was breathtaking. It brought into perspective the events that took place million years ago. In essence, the film presented the role of meteorites and their connectedness to the history of the solar system. This offered a solid foundation for the understanding of the concepts later presented in the exhibition. I came across one of this displays which stated that meteorite were rocks from space, which had survived their passage in the universe to land to the surface of the Earth. Some meteorites, are often heard or seen, when they fall and are collected afterwards while other are discovered later. The size of meteorites varies, in that some are large to cause craters upon falling while others are small and one need a help magnifying equipments to vie them. They take different forms, where some resemble igneous rocks, and others are metals. Despite their variation in terms of appearance, size, and manner of discovery, they are all pieces of different bodies in space, rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953795152542547760.post-51563054149528759672019-11-16T05:50:00.001-08:002019-11-16T05:50:05.252-08:00Motivation to Exercise: Social or Personal Factors?Motivation to Exercise: Social or Personal Factors? Everybody needs to exercise regardless of ones age, gender, socio-economic status, or even physical or mental capabilities. Exercising can be in the form of sports, going to the gym or merely just walking around the housing area. According to Hornby (2005), the word exercise means activities; bodily activities such as moving the extremities or the trunk and psychological actions that is done in order to maintain health. According to Bouchard, Blair and Haskell (2007), exercise is basically considered as a repetitive psychical activity that is done to spend ones free time in order to sustain and increase a persons bodily robustness. Exercise, defined as planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness (National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Panel, 1996). Exercise:à physical activity carried out for the sake of health and fitness (Soanes Stevenson, 2004). Now the question is does everybody exercise ? Is motivation important in exercising? What usually motivates a person to exercise? We know the answer to the first question by just looking at the people around us. Not everyone we know exercise. Yes, motivation is very important to exercise. As that influences a person to exercises or not to exercise. A person who exercises generally has a motive or also widely known as motivation. Motivation, according to Hornby (2005) is the explanation for a person to act in a certain manner. Motivation:à the stimulus, incentive, or inducement to act or react in a certain way. Purposeful behavior is motivated behavior, which means that either physiologic or social stimuli activate or motivate a person to do something (Nunez Fehrenbach, 2007). There are different aspects to motivation. It could be an external factor or an internal factor. External motivation: à incentive that accrues as a result of influence from outside sources; inducement to act or change based on the expectations and e xamples of other people. Internal motivation: incentive that accrues from within an individual; inducement to act or change based on an inherent or intrinsic desire (Nunez Fehrenbach, 2007). Motivation to exercise would vary between one person to the other. It could be to lose weight, to maintain their body figure, to increase ones self esteem, to spend time with friends or to stay healthy by avoiding degenerative diseases such as obesity, cardio-vascular disease, and hypertension. This research focuses on the two factors that contribute to the motivating a person to exercise which are the social factors and the personal factors. What is a social factor? According to Hornby (2005), the word social is defined as associated with actions that revolve around folks so that they get to congregate for contentment. The word factor according to Hornby (2005) means the reason to engage in an activity. Social motivation: an incentive or drive resulting from a sociocultural influence that init iates behavior toward a particular goal. (Nunez Fehrenbach, 2007) The social factors that is tested in this study are time spend with friends, wining in physical activities over friends, fitting in social circle and so on. What is personal factor? According to Hornby (2005), the word personal means that a person has possession of something and others do not own it. Self-motivated: motivated to do something because of ones own enthusiasm or interest, without needing pressure from others, acting on ones own initiative without external pressure (Soanes Stevenson, 2003). The personal factors that are tested in this research are that exercising gives people the time to think, to keep ones body healthy and so on. One theoretical perspective that appears useful for understanding various motivational issues in physical activity settings is self-determination theory (SDT; Deci Ryan, 2002). SDT accounts for the quality of motivation regulating behavior, as well as, the processes that facilitate motivational development (Deci Ryan, 2002) that holds considerable appeal for understanding why people initiate, persist, and terminate their involvement in various physical activities (Hagger Chatzisarantis, 2007). According to Deci and Ryan (2002), basic psychological needs represent innate nutriments (p. 7) that when satisfied authentically within social contexts promote integration, adaptation, and directly impact well-being. In contrast, environments that stifle opportunities to satisfy basic psychological needs provoke ill-being (Deci Ryan, 2002). SDT proposes that motivation is multidimensional and resides along a continuum of self-determination ranging from amotivation (i.e. when a person lacks the motivation to act) through extrinsic motivation (i.e. when a person acts in response to external cues) to intrinsic motivation (i.e. when a person acts for the inherent pleasure derived from that particular activity) (Deci and Ryan, 1985). The basic psychological needs for competence (effectively mastering challenging tasks within ones environment; Deci Ryan, 2002), autonomy (feeling a sense of ownership over ones behaviors such that they stem from an internal perceived locus of causality; Deci Ryan, 2002), and relatedness (feeling a meaningful connection with others in ones social milieu; Deci Ryan, 2002) have long been advocated within the SDT framework as fundamental to human development and well-being. SDT also considers that what goal a person holds for the activity will be important for a number of outcomes (Deci Ryan, 2002).. The content of goals can be classified as either intrinsic or extrinsic (Kasser Ryan, 1996). Intrinsic goals, such as the formation of social relationships and self-development, stem from a persons core values and are inherently rewarding to pursue. As such, they promote self determined behavior and well-being (Furnham et al., 2002). In a study conducted by Fontaine et al. (2002) based in an African American Apostolic church, 48 participants completed measures of social support, health-related quality of life, depression, exercise self-efficacy, and exercise motivation and then participated in an exercise program for 6 months. Exercise Motivation Inventory used to determine the personal motivations to participate in an exercise program comprised 14 subscales: stress management, revitalization, enjoyment, challenge, social recognition, affiliation, competition, health pressures, ill-health avoidance, positive health, weight management, appearance, strength and endurance, and nimbleness, where a higher score predicted a higher motivation. This study found that, in this community, people with high scores on affiliation were more likely to attend the exercise program. The authors concluded that exercise adherence is a complicated phenomenon that is influenced by a variety of environmental, personal, and social factor s. Social factors, in particular, may be important in promoting adherence to an exercise program in African Americans. However, it must be noted that the sample size for this study was small which prohibited the use of multivariate statistical techniques (i.e., logistic regression) to evaluate the predictive value of the study variables (Fontaine et al., 2002). In another study conducted by Gillison (2001) using a sample of 580 British schoolchildren, a model grounded in self-determination theory was explored to examine the effects of exercise goals on exercise motivation, leisure-time exercise behavior. Exercise goal content was measured using the Reasons for Exercise Inventory. Motivation towards exercise was measured using The Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire. This study hypothesized that self-determined motivation would partially mediate the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic goal content and leisure-time exercise. Intrinsic (and therefore more adaptive) goals for exercise can persist despite the presence of body related anxiety. Results of structural equation modeling revealed that adolescents perceiving themselves to be overweight and pressurized to lose weight endorsed extrinsic weight-related goals for exercise. Extrinsic goals negatively predicted, whereas intrinsic goals positively predicted, self-determined motivation, which in turn positively predicted exercise behavior. Self-determined motivation partially mediated the effects of exercise goals on reported exercise behavior. Results suggest that holding extrinsic exercise goals could compromise exercise participation levels. Teachers and parents are proposed with the aim of orienting young people towards intrinsic goals in an attempt to enhance future exercise behavior. It was hypothesized that self-determined motivation would positively predict participants leisure-time exercise. Conversely, extrinsic goals stem from aims to achieve outcomes separable from the activity it self, such as wealth and status, and are usually formed in response to external pressures. Extrinsic exercise goals negatively predicted, while intrinsic goals positively predicted, levels of self-determined motivation. In turn, greater self-determination in motivation predicted higher levels of leisure-time exercise. Fostering intrinsic goals could be beneficial for improving the mental health and exercise behavior in adolescents (Gillison, 2001). Dishman, Hales, Ward, Pfeiffer, Felton, Saunders, Dowda and Pate (2006), conducted a study on 1250 girls (39% White, 54.6% Black and 3.9% Others) whose mean age are of 17.66 years old from public high schools in South Carolina. The results of their study indicated that as bodily actions and partaking in games increases in an individual, their general perception of ones physical self increases too. General perception of ones physical self in this study focuses on aspects such as power, stamina, looks, and skills in a game. This means that people take part in games and exercise to increase their self-esteem or skills to avoid psychological conditions like depression. Although this study was conducted only among females and of those in the youth category, the results can still be applied to people of all ages and all walk of lives as exercising and its motivation are applicable for everyone. Ekeland, Heian, and Hagen (2005) conducted a study on 1821 kids and youngsters on the relationship between self-esteem and exercising. They discovered that physical activity is highly related positively with self-esteem. As the number of participants is high, the results can be well substantiated. On the other hand, there are many social factors that seem to be more convincing as compared to personal factors in predicting the motivation on exercising. Group cohesion plays an important role in this content. It contributes a positive connection on exercising regarding different aspects of group. All individuals that formed a group will become more significant. A persons act is influence by a group. It has been proven that there are effective associations between the mutual effort and conceptions of stay in a group. Abele and Ehrhart (as cited in Spink, Wilson, Priebe, 2010) proposed that as peoples thought themselves and others were in the same group, peoples were put more efforts toward the task that they work together. There are five specific variables identified by Carron Hausenblas (1998). The five variables are common fate, mutual benefit, social structure, group processes, and self-categorization. Common fate can be described as an event that joins by all the group membe rs and they share the same consequences together (Fiedler, 1967). Mutual benefit implies that the requirements obtained among the group members in a certain works (Bass, 1960).Whereas social structure can be defined as the position and duty in a group (Sherif Sherif, 1956). Shaw (1981) commented group processes as the conversation and useful interactions that take place within a group. The last variable that is self-categorization implies a sense of belongingness in one group (Brown, 1988). The five variables play an important role in the social aspect part to determine the motivation towards exercising. There is hypothesis on the five variables; common fate, mutual benefit, social structure, group processes, and self-categorization have a definite connection to the self-report regarding the devotion in an exercising activities (Spink, Wilson, Priebe, 2010). There are four evidences that support this hypothesis. Previous research conducted by Massie Shephard (1971) showed that th e attendance is higher in group-based exercise programs than individual or family ones. Steers Rhodes (1978) found out that there is a different type of adherence; energy expenditure can be seen in individual that more apprehend on group aspects in their structured exercise assembly. Furthermore, groupness can be considered to be related to adherence in exercise programs as members show more interest in remaining in a group through the cohesion mechanism that aid in fasten peoples together (Fraser Spink, 2002). Another factor that motivates exercising is exercising with the presence of friends. This happens especially in low-self monitoring individuals. The character that friend act in a persons life is significant as considered in the amount of time spend, variability of activities and role that friend can play. By viewing in this context, the fact that friend plays an important role in an individuals lives cannot be deny. It is an important matter to choose a compatible friend to engage in social activities particularly in exercising. Some knowledge and skills on the appropriate way to perform the activities is useful if all of these own by the friend (Synder, Gangestad, Simpson, 1983). The exercise that carry out seem to be much more easier if one is accompanied by friend that displayed competence and expertise in performing particular activities (Synder, Gangestad, Simpson, 1983). One that is get motivated will do more effort in displaying his or her competency and expertise and act in a suitable way in carry out certain exercise because of the opportunity that he or she received from friend that considered specialist in an activity (Synder, Gangestad, Simpson, 1983). There is also fact that friend will affect one in exercise through the mindset, affection, and choice towards partner that one will carry out physical activities with (Synder, Gangestad, Simpson, 1983). The extent to which a person shows his or her liking towards the partner will influence a person in engaging in an activity. There are people who look for coherence between their attitude and course of action in real life. In this case, people particularly in low-self monitoring person will be more likely to spend their time with their preferred partner. Correspond to this; the person will increase their approach towards specific peoples in their social circle and also their behavioral preference in the activities with those that they preferred (Synder, Gangestad, Simpson, 1983). There are some differences between high-self monitoring and low-self monitoring people in selecting their social partner. In general, the presence of friend is substantial in boosting the attitude in engaging social activities like exercise. Belza, Walwick, Schwartz, LoGerfo, Shiu-Thornton, Taylor (2004), conducted their study on 71 adults (42 females and 29 males) with their mean age being 71.6 years old on seven groups that differ in ethnicity and their mother-tongue in America such as the African American, American Indian, Native Alaskan, etc where almost 35 of them exercise on a regular basis. The participants were asked on what drove them to exercise (eg: wellbeing looks, able to hang around wi th people and so on). They found that most the participants believe that they exercise because they it benefits them both in the social aspect and health purposes (to manage constant conditions such as ache, high blood pressure, arthritis and high glucose level in the blood). He also found that when a persons overall motivation (social and personal) drops, his or her bodily activity level drops as well. This study is done to investigate whether personal factors or social factors contribute more motivation to exercise. Theory of self-efficacy, which states that the more individuals believe in their ability to perform a course of action and in the positive outcomes of those actions, the more likely they will be to initiate and persist in a given activity (Bandura, 1997). Bandura (1997) describes four sources of information that influence self-efficacy expectations (and presumably outcome expectations) and consequently actual behavior: performance of the activity, verbal encouragement from others, exposure to role models, and physiological feedback or physical sensations experienced during the activity. In a study aimed at establishing what aspects of self-efficacy theory helped initiate and engage in regular exercise, and what decreased the willingness to exercise, a total of 148 older adults from 12 Senior Centers participated, with the majority of the participants being female African American. Findings support the use of the theory of self-efficacy to change behavior among minority older adults. In this study, the extrinsic incentives were emphasized to motivate the participants. The motivational component of the program included verbal encouragement and goal setting with small incentive gifts for goal achievement, cueing to exercise through the use of written material and calendars, and role modeling of exercise through exposure to the lay exercise leader and other group members. The participants in this study specifically recognized the importance of social supports as a source of motivation to exercise. The participants reported that it was laziness that prevented them from exercising, and they needed the group interaction to motivate them to come to exercise class. This external force helped participants to rekindle old exercise habits, to initiate an exercise program, or to increase the amount of exercise they did. This study was limited in that it included only older adults who volunteered to participate in an exercise program and regularly attended senior centers (Lu isi et al., 2006). Methodology Participants Data was collected from 27th up to 31st January 2011. There were 130 subjects (51 males and 79 females) who filled the survey completely. The age range was from 18 to 65 years old and the mean age was 22.669 years old. The data was consisting of 58 Malay, 17 Chinese, 21 Indians, and 34 participants from other race such as; Korean, African, Sikh, Arabian, Pakistani and Mauritanian. We also asked their perspective of their body weight by rating the scale which provided inside the demographic (refer to appendix B). We did a convenience sampling survey in Petaling Jaya and Johor. Refer to table 1. Demographic Mean Frequency Percentages Age Gender Male Female Total Ethnicity Malay Chinese Indian Others Total Perspective of body weight Underweight Normal Overweight Obese Total 22.669 130 51 79 130 17 58 21 34 130 9 99 20 2 130 100 39.2 60.8 100 13.1 44.6 16.2 26.2 100 6.9 76.2 15.4 1.5 100 Measurement The survey questions were adapted from The Exercise Motivation Inventory (Markland and Hardy, 1993) questionnaire. However, we selected and modified some of the questions. In total, there was 20 Questions inside our survey which contained of 10 Social Factor question and 10 Personal Factor Question. This survey used a 5 scale; Not Important=1, Less Important= 2, Neutral=3, Moderately important=4, and Very Important=5. The measurement was appropriate for our study because it was not only asking people who do any exercise regularly such as fitness but also for people who do not regularly exercise. The questionnaire was referring to healthiness, diet and body shape, and environment relation. Furthermore, EMI is suitable to be assigned to younger (at least 18 years old) and older people. Procedure First, we developed the survey and delivered it to course instructor. After receiving the approval we then can started collecting the data. The participants were asked by the researchers to fill the survey voluntarily. After they agreed, they were given a consent form and the survey form. All information about this study was clearly written down on the consent form. It took approximately 10 minutes to fill the survey and participants may withdraw from the study anytime when they feel unsecure or disturbed. After they fully filled the survey, they may give it back to the researchers and leave. We found some problems while collecting the data, some of the subjects refuse to join this study because they do not understand the English language properly, they needed to go to their next class, below the minimum age or just refused to participate without any reason. Results To investigate the relationship between types of motivation and level of motivation, a Paired Sample T-Test was used. As seen in Table 2, there is a significant relationship between types of motivation and level of motivation, t (129) = 8.479, p Table 2 Mean Differences Between Personal Factors and Social Factors that motivate Exercising Variable à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Mean à à à à à à à à à dfà à à à à à à à à à à t à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Personal Factors Social Factors Older Adult Perspectives on Physical Activity and Exercise: Voices From Multiple Cultures Basia Belza, PhD, RN, Julie Walwick, MSW, Sheryl Schwartz, PhD, James LoGerfo, MD, MPH, Sharyne Shiu-Thornton, PhD, and Mary Taylor, BSN, RN (2004) Bouchard, C., Blair, S. The barriers that limit womenââ¬â¢s and minorities progress toward employment equity extend from the glass ceiling at the top of corporations to the floor of low paying jobs in the labor market. These barriers are created by a process at exclusion that continuously eliminates women, minorities, and other underprivileged groups from being candidates of higher positions. When a company exercises this type of discrimination, they look for the most defensible explanation they can find to make this behavior seem acceptable. The ââ¬Å"glass ceilingâ⬠is still very much a part of the corporate world today as it was many years ago. This is evident by the hindered progress of women and minorities seen in much of the corporate workforce. In order to develop the theme of influence of the invisible glass ceiling to the work place, it is important to rely on the background of this opinion. According to the economical point of view, the glass ceiling is referred to as the unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the top of the corporate ladder, regardless of their qualification or achievements. This metaphor was initially only applied to women, but quickly extended to minority men as well (Shedd). While legislation regarding discrimination based on gender prevents overt discrimination, subtle measures have been found to exist within many organizations which effectively prevent women from moving into the highest levels of management. These include doubtful success criteria, inaccurate perception of womenââ¬â¢s aspirations and progress, and cultural biases against working women (Miller 18). Blocked opportunitie... ...eeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder regardless of their qualifications or achievements. This barrier of blocking women and minorities from reaching top echelons reveals the extent of the problems faced by women. There is no doubt that the glass ceiling continues to plague talented women who struggle to reach the top positions in their career. The glass ceiling is also a problem for top management of corporations that need to recognize the changes in the modern age. By following the traditional way of hiring and promoting individuals, corporations are missing out on the vast talent pool of women. By opening higher management positions to women, corporations stand to benefit from the creativity, more interactional, more participative, and knowledge of women who will offer a unique perspective to growing corporations. rosettatorres198http://www.blogger.com/profile/09098636507567481630noreply@blogger.com0
